The History of Memorial Day - posted 5/19/08 (New)

Memorial Day is much more than a three-day weekend that marks the beginning of summer. To many people, especially the nation's thousands of combat veterans, this day, which has a history stretching back all the way to the Civil War, is an important reminder of those who died in the service of their country. Scout Spotlight - posted 5/19/08 (New)

Harrison Ford - Actor / Life Scout

Born July 13, 1942 - Mr. Ford is an Academy Award-nominated, as well as Golden Globe-winning, American actor. Ford is best known for his performances as space pilot Han Solo in the original Star Wars trilogy and as the archaeologist Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr. in the Indiana Jones film series. He has worked as an actor for over 40 years At one point, Ford had roles in the top five box-office hits of all time,

He was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he achieved its second highest rank, Life Scout and worked at a Scout Camp as a Reptile Study merit badge counselor. Because of this, he and director Steven Spielberg later decided that the character of young Indiana Jones would be depicted as a Life Scout in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. They also jokingly reversed Ford's knowledge of reptiles into Jones' fear of snakes and spiders.

In 1997, he was ranked #1 in Empire's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list.

Have you heard this one?

Twice in one year, Harrison Ford used his helicopter to help rescue a hiker stranded near his Jackson, Wyoming, home. Ford rescued a 13-year-old Utah Boy Scout who had become separated from his troop in a forest near Yellowstone National Park. Ford helped in the search using his own helicopter, searching the woods by air for two hours until he found the boy at 8:30, unharmed. ''Boy, you sure must have earned a merit badge for this one,'' said the star. ''I already earned this badge last summer,'' said the scout. Ford, who turns 59 tomorrow, rescued a woman off an 11,100-foot peak last July when altitude sickness and dehydration left her too ill to climb down.

03/11/08 Scouting Tips - (New)
Thanks to Scoutmaster Jerry.

Pack a Box of Baking Soda When Going Camping

You can use it if a bee stings you. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply to the affected area to soothe it. To help put out a dying campfire, toss a handful of baking soda at the base of the fire. To get rid of smells in your sleeping bag, pour some baking soda inside to absorb odors.
